England met stiff opposition
in their first match of this tri-cornered tournament. A strong first quarter
performance was rewarded after twenty-two minutes with an opportunists
goal from Michael Owen when goalkeeper Seigo Narazaki split a long range
shot from Steven Gerrard. Japan's reply in the 1-1 draw came from a left
wing cross that was slotted home by Shinji Ono on fifty-three minutes. |
